When the rules change, you can either watch from the sidelines, or you can step onto the field and play to win.
T. Reneé Smith
I’ll be honest, when AI first started dominating headlines, I brushed it off. I thought, “This is just another tech wave… like social media was in the beginning. I’ll get to it when I have time.”
But one day, I sat in a meeting with a potential client, and they began discussing how they were already utilizing AI to reduce their administrative time by half, make faster decisions, and identify opportunities before their competitors. I nodded along like I understood, but inside, I felt this knot in my stomach.
That knot wasn’t fear of the technology; it was fear of being left behind.
The Moment It Hit Me
Later that week, I tested an AI tool just to “see what the fuss was about.” I assigned it a task that normally takes me hours, something I would have delegated to a team member or set aside a weekend to finish. But AI did it in minutes. Yes, minutes. I was impressed!
That’s when I realized AI wasn’t just for “tech people.” It wasn’t a fad. It was a competitive advantage, one I couldn’t afford to ignore.
The Cost of Waiting
Here’s what I know now:
- The learning curve only gets steeper the longer you wait.
- Opportunities will pass you by while you’re trying to “catch up” later.
- Your voice matters. If women don’t step into AI conversations now, decisions will be made without us at the table.
Mindset Shift: From Skeptic to Strategist
At first, I thought AI might replace the human touch in leadership. Now I see it differently: AI can take tasks off your plate, allowing you to spend more time on the work only you can do —leading, connecting, and creating.
Reflection Question: What’s one area of your business, leadership, or personal life that would change dramatically if you had 10 more hours a week?
Action Steps to Stop Sitting on the Sidelines
- Pick One Area to Start: Instead of trying to “learn everything,” start with one area where AI can make your life easier, such as automating scheduling or analyzing data.
- Make it a Habit: Spend 10 minutes a day exploring AI tools or prompts that fit your world.
- Join the Conversation: Surround yourself with people (especially women) who are using AI strategically so you can learn faster.
- Test, Tweak, Repeat: You don’t have to get it perfect on day one. AI is a skill that grows with practice.
